What to prepare:

Please register for an audition slot and complete the audition form linked here:

Auditionees should prepare 32 bars (or 1 minute) of a musical theatre song in the style of the show (please no songs from Sweeney Todd). A Sondheim song is preferred. Please bring either a track or sheet music marked with your cut for our accompanist.

Callbacks will be by invitation only and will include singing from the show, reading sides, and a dance call.

Virtual auditions will be considered for this show. Please submit a video of yourself singing 32 bars (1 minute) of a song in the style of the show to auditions@theatrestars.org by the date of auditions. Please complete an audition form as well.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

Sweeney Todd: Bass-baritone, Bb4-G2. A wrongfully imprisoned barber seeking to right the wrongs committed against him. He is Johanna's father, singularly focused on taking bloody revenge. Our story's tormented protagonist, ferocious yet vulnerable.

Mrs. Lovett: Mezzo-soprano, F5-F#3. An entrepreneurial and amoral shop owner with a diabolical passion for pies... and Todd. Quirky, selfish, yet practical and maternal, she turns Todd’s desire for revenge into a profitable business venture. She will do whatever it takes to survive.

Judge Turpin: Bass, F4-E2. A corrupt and lecherous public official who hides in the guise of sanctimonious honor. He takes advantage of his political authority in the city and is responsible for imprisoning Todd.

Beggar Woman: Mezzo-soprano, G#5-G3. An eerie, poor soul living on the streets of London who harbors a dark, surprising secret. Much like Cassandra, she speaks truths that no one will hear.

Anthony Hope: Tenor, F#4-C3. A naive and youthful sailor returning to London. Idealistic, romantic, and a little reckless, he helps Todd return to London and unexpectedly falls in love with Johanna, Todd’s daughter.

Johanna: Soprano, Bb6-C4. Judge Turpin's young, lovely ward and Todd's long-lost daughter. A melancholic girl, full of innocence, constantly aching to free herself from Turpin's grasp.

Tobias: Tenor, A5-D3. A poor youngster who is apprenticed to Pirelli, but finds a strange, surrogate family in Todd and Mrs. Lovett. Industrious and eager to please, Toby may be uneducated but he remains innately clever and observant.

Beadle Bamford: Tenor, C5-Bb2. A pompous public official whose real loyalty is only to the corrupt Turpin. Responsible for the health and safety of London, he wields his own power with a dry sense of humor.

Adolfo Pirelli: Tenor, A4-G#2. A flamboyant, world-famous Italian barber with a secret past. A charlatan and a public rival to Todd, Pirelli is charming, calculating, and the quintessential showman.

Ensemble: SATB. The ensemble acts as a Greek Chorus, commenting on the action and inviting us to attend the tale. They are the show’s chief storytellers, taking on the roles of customers, townspeople, police, inmates at the insane asylum, Sweeney’s thoughts, and Sweeney’s victims. The ensemble will have ample opportunities for vocal showcases throughout the show.
