CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

ORPHEUS (masculine presenting) – A young, starving artist who believes his music can change the world. He creates something beautiful out of nothing. He resists structure. Guitar skills a plus. (Tenor with strong falsetto, range: D3-C5 (opt. Eb5))

EURYDICE (feminine presenting) – Practical, clever, and survival-oriented. Her hunger—both literal and emotional—makes her vulnerable to Hadestown’s promises. (Mezzo-Soprano, range: F#3-D5)

HADES (masculine presenting)– Slick, corporate, and untouchable. His empire is built on compliance, fear, and routine. He’s a seducer, not with charm, but with security- the cold promise of a full belly and a warm cot.(Bass, range: F2-C#4)

PERSEPHONE (feminine presenting)– She used to be a wild, expressive bohemian, but she married Hades and now she’s the beautiful, lonely “trophy wife.” She still rebels in small ways.  (Mezzo-Soprano/Alto, range: F3-C5)

HERMES (any gender) – Charismatic guide and storyteller, mentor to Orpheus. Once a passionate soul, now reduced to a cog in Hadestown’s machinery. A witness, not a savior. Always on the sidelines, silently witnessing. (Tenor/Bass, range: C3-B4)

FATES (feminine presenting)– Always watching, they know everything. They offer choices, but it's always a trap. (Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, range E3-D5 (Fate 1 up to Eb5))

WORKERS (all genders)– Above ground, a colony of artists and creatives. in Hadestown, an ensemble of exhausted, robotic workers. They represent those trapped in the system. Each of them have a personality buried deep inside, but they’ve learned to keep their heads down. Especially seeking performers with unique artistic skills- musicians, artists, etc. (SATB)
