SIERRA’S SENTIMENTS

It may be cold outside, but we’ve been spending the winter thinking about SUMMER! We were so excited to announce both our summer camp and our STARS Senior program shows recently! At camp this summer, our campers will be presenting “9 to 5 Jr.” during session one and “Something Rotten Jr.” during session two. There are so many great opportunities in these shows for all of our campers to shine, and we’re so excited to meet the cast and crew of these shows. If your young actor wants to be a part of it, you can register now! Also just announced is the second year of our beloved STARS Senior program for adult-beginner actors. We’re so thrilled to be producing “The Music Man Sr.” just in time for America’s 250th birthday! We hope you’ll consider joining us (even if you have stage fright)! Hadestown auditions wrapped up and we were super impressed with the nearly 100 auditions we saw. Our cast will start rehearsing in February for performances in March. Meanwhile, our Wolves cast enjoyed a well-earned winter break before hitting the ground running at The Grange. We hope you’ll join us for this one- it’s touching, hilarious, and full of heart. Our spectacular cast is performing just three times, and tickets are limited, so act fast! Finally, we just wrapped up our winter master class series, taught by Julien DaSilva. Julien is a brilliant actor and teacher, and we were honored to have him with us to lead these two workshops. From all of us at STARS, we hope you had a restful and joyful holiday season.

the wolves opens this weekend!

Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A girls indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals.

Directed by Maggie Shircliff

The dialogue reflects how teenagers speak when adults aren’t around, which includes strong language and discussion of disordered eating, abortion, death, references to substance abuse of varying kinds, bullying, racism, the use of an ableist slur, and allusions to suicide.

senior spotlight

This month’s Senior Spotlight features Madelyn Regan!

Madelyn is a senior at Centreville High School. You may have seen her as Miss Strict in Zombie Prom, Rona Lisa Peretti in Spelling Bee, or dancing in the ensemble of Spring Awakening. Madelyn also works with us as a teaching artist, most recently serving as music director at camp Beetlejuice Jr. and Singin’ In the Rain Jr.

What are your plans for the future?

“I'm applying to some schools for a BFA in Musical Theatre, and to some for a double major (BA in Music and BS in Psychology). While my true passion will always lie in performance, I'm looking to dive into all aspects of the musical theatre industry; whether that be composition, playwriting, or even directing. No matter where I end up, I want to keep the arts in my life and help contribute to their undeniable impact on our world.”

What is your favorite STARS memory?

“I think every single day of Summer Stars had an unforgettable memory. If I had to pick a favorite, though, it would be Color Wars: the day during each session where teams of campers dressed up in their signature color and faced off in a kickball tournament! We all came up with team chants, chose a walk-up song, and jammed out to music together on the sidelines. Still, my favorite part was that no matter which team scored a home run, every single camper cheered. Summer Stars was one of the most supportive, uplifting environments I’ve ever gotten the pleasure to be a part of—it was such a joy to watch the campers become a family over the course of 2 weeks.”

What advice would you give to someone auditioning for a STARS show?

“Absolutely do it! It's intimidating to step foot into an entirely new group of people, but the STARS family is as inclusive and encouraging as it gets. I've learned so much from not just the incredible staff, but also the dynamic cast (and campers!) of every production; every single person involved in a STARS show has something new to bring to the table. Bring your best, authentic self to the audition, and go out of your way to connect with all the new people you meet!”
